Pre-Transfusion Serological Testing: Are we Doing it Right?
نویسنده
چکیده
Pre-transfusion testing is performed to ensure the normal survival of transfused red blood cell products i.e. to prevent hemolytic transfusion reaction via immune-mediated mechanism [1]. The serological part of pre-transfusion testing includes; ABO group and Rh (D) type, antibody screening and crossmatching [2]. Antibody screening is included to detect unexpected antibody and was first introduced after the discovery of Coombs test “antiglobulin test” in 1945 [3]. With the characterization of more red blood cell antibodies, more tests and different techniques were introduced.

Identification of First Patient with Rh null Phenotype in Southeast Iran
Background and Aims: Rhnull, with an estimated incidence of one per 6,000,000 individuals, is an extremely rare disorder with an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance that is more common in societies with a high rate of consanguinity. Materials and Methods: In this study, we report the first case with Rhnull, a blood group phenotype in southeast Iran, which was diagnosed during pretransf...
متن کاملSerological Study on Cytomegalovirus and Toxoplasma Gondii in
Background Beta-thalassemia patients receive blood products from blood transfusion centers repeatedly. Blood transfusion can transmit Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Toxoplasma gondii. The aim of this study was serological evaluation of these two infectious agents in thalassemia patients. Materials and Methods In a cross-sectional study, the enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) testing was pe...

ALTHOUGH BLOOD transfusion had been practised spasmodically since the seventeenth century it was not until the discovery of the blood groups in 1900 that it became a potentially safe procedure, and pre-transfusion compatibility testing could be undertaken. Blood grouping and transfusion practice until the second world war remained very primitive, however. Some of the techniques in use in the 19...

We read with interest the recent report by Garner et al. [l], in which anti-E was detected early in pregnancy solely through the use of enzymetreated red blood cells (RBC). The serological reactivity of this anti-E changed dramatically during pregnancy; the antibody became detectable by the indirect antiglobulin test, and at 37 weeks’ gestation had a titer of 512. Delivery at 40 weeks’ gestatio...

HBV still represents a global risk factor in transfusion medicine. The residual risk of HBV is not limited to pre-seroconversion window period but it extends to donors with occult HBV infection (OBI) characterized by the presence of HBV DNA in liver and by the absence of the virus surface antigen. Each country developed an appropriate blood screening policy according to local HBV prevalence, yi...
